Health and Nutrition

At UMR, we are committed to improving the health and well-being of communities around the world.

Health and Nutrition

UMR believes that access to quality, dignified healthcare is a human right, not a privilege. We design comprehensive health programs that respond to urgent needs in conflict-affected and under-resourced regions while strengthening the systems that communities rely on long after the crisis ends. From hospitals in Sudan to refugee camps in Jordan and underserved areas in Yemen, UMR is committed to building healthier, more resilient communities.

Strengthening Health Systems in Emergencies

In conflict-affected and resource-poor regions, local health systems are often under immense strain or have collapsed entirely. UMR works closely with ministries of health and local clinics to provide essential medicines, equipment, and staff training to keep basic services running. We help set up mobile health clinics and support hospitals in delivering primary and emergency care, including mental health services and trauma treatment.

In places like Sudan, Ethiopia, Yemen, Gaza, and Jordan, we have equipped hospitals and clinics with oxygen concentrators, ICU equipment, pharmaceuticals, and Interagency Emergency Health Kits (IEHKs). These kits provide essential medications and supplies for up to 10,000 people for three months—enabling healthcare systems to continue serving their communities. By training and mentoring healthcare workers, UMR builds long-term capacity to provide high-quality, equitable care even after emergency funding ends.

Treating Malnutrition

Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM)

Malnutrition is one of the leading causes of death among children under five, especially in regions facing conflict or drought. UMR implements CMAM programs in Sudan, Yemen, and Kenya to provide early diagnosis and treatment for children experiencing moderate or severe acute malnutrition (MAM/SAM).

In Sudan, our teams support families through every step of the recovery process—from screening and outpatient therapeutic feeding to home visits and referrals for inpatient care. We also distribute Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), micronutrient supplements, and medications, while promoting breastfeeding and proper infant and young child feeding practices. Through our training of community health workers, we ensure that early identification and care continue beyond the project cycle.

Cataract Surgeries

Restoring Sight and Dignity

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness globally—but they are highly treatable through a simple, low-cost surgical procedure. UMR provides free cataract surgeries to patients who would otherwise remain blind due to poverty, displacement, or lack of access to care.

We organize cataract surgery campaigns in Jordan, Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, and Yemen, bringing in experienced ophthalmologists and mobilizing outreach teams to identify patients in need. These surgeries restore not only vision but also independence, dignity, and the ability to care for one’s family or return to work. The majority of our patients are elderly and displaced people who would be left behind without this support.
